About Us

The motivation of this research comes from the increasing interests in miRNAs and the demand for an instrument which can document and offer easy access to experimental results of microRNA expression profiles.

Many studies show that miRNA is involved in regulating crucial processes. One of the most exciting involvements of miRNA is its association with cancers. Many investigations are being carried out on miRNA-based diagnostics and therapeutics for different kinds of cancers. Although most of the experimental results from those studies were clearly documented and are available to public, they are scattered in literatures.

This website aims to provide a graphic user interface to facilitate miRNA-cancer profile database search and provide sequence analysis tools to analyze selected sequences.

March 18th, 2017: miRCancer has database update with data from all published literatures before March 16th, 2017.

December 7th, 2016: miRCancer has database update with data from all published literatures before December 6th, 2016.

September 5th, 2016: miRCancer has database update with data from all published literatures before Septermber 4th, 2016.

August 9th 2016: The paper "miRCancer: a microRNA-cancer association database constructed by text mining on literature" has been referenced 100 time.

June 22nd, 2016: miRCancer has database update with data from all published literatures before March 13th, 2016.

March 23rd, 2016: miRCancer has database update with data from all published literatures before March 22nd, 2016.

December 3rd, 2015: miRCancer has database update with data from all published literatures before December 2nd, 2015.

June 15, 2015: miRCancer has database update with data from all published literatures before June 13th, 2015.

March 14, 2015: miRCancer has database update with data from all published literatures before March 10th, 2015.

December 7, 2014: miRCancer has database update with data from all published literatures before December 4th, 2014. microRNA data is updated from miRBase.org release 21.

October 31, 2014: Book chapter "Text Mining on Big and Complex Biomedical Literature" is published.

September 23, 2014: miRCancer has database update with data from all published literatures before Septermber 17th, 2014.

June 14, 2014: miRCancer has database update with data from all published literatures before June 9th, 2014.

March 11, 2014: miRCancer has database update with data from all published literatures before March 9th, 2014.

December 4, 2013: miRCancer has database update with microRNA data from mirBase.org release 20 and literature data from all published literatures before September 1st, 2013. A minor microRNA name recognition bug is fixed which leads to about 500 new -miRNA-cancer relationships inserted to miRCancer database this time.

September 23, 2013: miRCancer has database update with data from all published literatures before September 14th, 2013.

June 23, 2013: miRCancer has database update with data from all published literatures before June 19th, 2013.

April 16, 2013: miRCancer mailing list is created, interested researchers can subscribe to the list in order to get updates about the miRCancer research. Additionally the database can be downloaded directly through the download web page.

March 22, 2013: miRCancer has database update with data from all published literatures before February 27th, 2013.

January 8, 2013: Our paper is published in Bioinformatic (2013) with free-access links in both HTML and PDF.

November 25, 2012: Happy Holiday! miRCancer has major database update with manual verification results which pushes the precision to 100%.

April 18, 2012: miRCancer moved to current new domain name with major web design update.

March 26, 2012: major database update with microRNA-cancer relation data extracted with rule-based text mining technique.

May 23, 2011: miRCancer was first launched with sequence analysis tools and microRNA-cancer relation data extracted with simple 3-occurance method.

People involved in miRCancer project

Boya Xie initiated this research as her Master's thesis project. She is fascinated about the microRNA-cancer related topics, and is dedicating to improve this research. Boya mainly works on the database construction, including data mining from literatures, and web design.

Dr. Qin Ding is the supervisor of the master's project. She is the corresponding contact for miRCancer.

Dr. Robert Hochberg provided the clustering and chi-square analysis algorithms. He is currently an Assistant Professor at University of Dallas.

Dr. Di Wu graduated from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, works on this research as the biology knowledge consultant. She is now a postdoc at Drexel University, College of Medicine.

Mr. Hongjin Han, a M.S. graduate student in Software Engineering, provides performance evaluation.
